David Wheater has admitted he is lucky to be going to Wembley to play in the FA Cup final with Bolton.
The central defender, who joined the club in January from Middlesbrough, will deputise for the injured Zat Knight in the semi-final against Stoke, but he is well aware of the role Lady Luck played in getting him to this point.
Wheater was set to play against Burton in the FA Cup third round in early January - which would have cup tied him - before he was dramatically pulled out by Tony Mowbray.
"I am very fortunate I wasn't actually cup-tied and been in the same position as Daniel Sturridge,"Wheater told theBolton News.
"Over the years at Middlesbrough, they always played their strongest sides in the cup.
"It was that one lucky time I didn't play. I certainly didn't ask not to be picked. I came in with my tracksuit on the Friday ready to play before the manager (Tony Mowbray) pulled me after training.
"The manager told me that the deal had been done so I wasn't travelling to Burton. He told me to take the weekend off."
